I really seriously hope that it still practise now here in my work... (oops i start again on my work blog here) hahaha but i just feel that it is nice to put it here... :)
it is Rules of the Garage.. it is simple but it speaks alot what we should be doing it :) fighting among internal is no use... but we should fight outside... and our customer should be the judge of a work well done :)
It goes like this...
- Believe you can change the world.
- Work quickly, keep the tools unlocked work whenever.
- Know when to work alone and when to work together.
- Share- tools, ideas. Turst your colleagues.
- No politics. No bureaucracy. (these are ridiculous in a garage)
- The customer defines a job well done.
- Radical ideas are not bad ideas.
- Invent different ways of working.
- Make a contribution every day. If it doesn't contribute, it doesn't leave the garage.
- Believe that together we can do anything.
- Invent.
I'm still proud of these.. although i'm not part of HP before.. but if you apply it in your working life... i believe it will be a much better workplace that it could be.
Lets go into each of them...
- Believe you can change the world.
= If each and everyone of the people in your work place believe that, the world / work can be much better place to be.
- Work quickly, keep the tools unlocked work whenever.
= it is the respond and responsible in every worker... easy access... for today world.. it means you need to work whenever you are and ur laptop are the tools of course your brain is part of it :)
- Know when to work alone and when to work together.
= this is quite true, sometime alot of meetings that had been called by teammate.. or alot of brains don't work together well... especially when you need to think through some of the process and you need some time to reallt go through your ideas before you present it out to your fellow colleagues.
- Share- tools, ideas. Turst your colleagues.
= Trust are important... share ideas.. as view things from different angle.. it helps in coming to a better solution.
- No politics. No bureaucracy. (these are ridiculous in a garage)
= if work place politics... it means alot of good ideas cannot be carry out as some one in the office because of personal interest sake... that person is kind of selfish.. but some people just don't care...
- The customer defines a job well done.
= this is true as customer pay your company and they pay ur salary or paycheck :). Some managers just don't get that ideas.. sometimes customer want a A feature.. but we keep giving B or C feature and in the end, customer just said you did not fulfill his request and off... but the manager still insist he did the right thing.. and try to use the B and C feature to get "other" customers.
- Radical ideas are not bad ideas.
= thats right as no one are good enough to judge. it is just viewing from different angle of the situations.
- Invent different ways of working.
= as was said... many roads lead to Rome... so your way works as well as others.. as long as it reach the end goals... think outside of the box if one ways does not meet the goal :)
- Make a contribution every day. If it doesn't contribute, it doesn't leave the garage.
= I used to think that way, everyday list down what we need to achieve. And will focus on those litle steps. It is the every little steps that make the successful goal.
- Believe that together we can do anything.
= one man strength cannot built a pyramid... but if we put together a group of people we can achieve more... and a team is always better in execution of the task.
- Invent.
= be creative... my ex boss always said Marketing is about creativity...
Rules are there for people to bend... and company do have rules, it is the marketing person creativity to bend those and make success stories.
